Feeding Off is Davichone's second official EP release through a major distributor, even though he's been doing electronic music for years. This one only has 3 tracks, but you can easily get lost in them -- play on repeat, throughout the whole night -- and do drugs, of course. The tracks are loosely glued together by some common elements, which is a nice touch.
This record feels like a symbiosis between technology and nature, in their extreme forms. Or like, a combination of crystal meth and psychedelics. Grinding your teeth while imagining biblically-accurate angels and feeling tectonic movements with every bass drum hit. Glitchy hi-hats, deep bass lines, spacey ambiance, and diversely modulated pads.
It's still house music, but with a dark twist to it. The melodies and chord progressions are not melancholic, themselves, but Davichone manages to add a gloomy vibe with his sound design skills. Happy tunes with sad undertones. Minimalistic drums induce a trance state, but also lots of subtle changes and small details appearing here and there throughout the EP.
Davichone shared with us that Feeding Off was actually a cathartic outlet for him. The music, he claims, was influenced by some dramatic events in his life -- mainly, a toxic relationship where one person was feeding off of the other person's energy, sucking them dry. For me, Feeding Off feels more like an intense journey, rather than a vulnerable affair. But hey, to each, their own.
With all that said, I can't say this is a memorable release. It's well made, it sounds great, it's interesting, but it's not something that I would wanna spontaneously pop in my car.
