NotRlyJamie - Dracula

NotRlyJamie is an alternative electro-"weirdo pop" project based in Atlanta. It's the successor of "Rainbow Bell" -- for those, who want to dig deeper. The debut EP "Dracula" presents 4 tracks that feature heartfelt lyrics, ingenious beats, and inventive synth modulation.

Track highlights

  • "MySpace": a melodic track with highly atmospheric synths and a spacey perfectly-balanced mix. The arpeggio and choir keys set up a euphoric mood, while the bassline gives the song an exciting groove. The catchy vocals tell a romantic story of infatuation. "Just to suck on your face" says it all. The gentle mellow keys suggest vulnerability. I mean, how could you not fuck with that space?
  • "Dog Eat Dog": another unconventional, but catchy song. The experimental beat features short percussive synths with fast modulation. The vocal flow is creatively broken up during the verses. The chorus is delivered in triplets after a short pause. I really enjoy the change of pace -- it creates confusion that matches the lyrics: "I don't know WTF you want from me". The synth lead during the instrumental bridge contributes even more to the memorable tunes packed together in this track.
  • "Scooby Doo": this one takes a spooky direction with a bewitching minor chord progression, deep bass, and massive reverb. Despite that, "Sooby Doo" is rhythmic and rich in percussive elements, like the pitch-shifting sound resembling water escaping a bottle. The way the chorus clears up after the first "gotta get up", with the reverb disappearing, is a pretty cool effect -- it's like peeking out of the dark cave for a moment to enjoy the catchy hook. I don't like the part that sounds like dubstep, though. It's a bit obnoxious, like the actual cartoon Scooby Doo, which I was so sick of, when I was a kid. They used to air it for hours on Cartoon Network, and all I wanted was some Cow & Chicken and Powerpuff Girls. Anyway, back to the song: I enjoyed the instrumental outro section -- it's not simply a copy-pasted part with no vocals -- instead, it deviates and shakes things up a little.

Rating: 8.5/10 bitemarks

Dracula is a perfect bloody cocktail of electronic music and pop. Comparable with purple drank, it has a powerful effect on the listener, causing euphoria and dissociation.
